What is Speech Level Singing(SLS)?

Speech Level Singing (SLS) Technique is unlike any vocal technique in existence today. SLS technique enables singers to develop a healthy, strong voice with great high notes and no breaks or strain. Students learn to sing from the chest voice to higher notes by "mixing" into the upper register, rather than forcing the chest voice up, or disconnecting into a weak, breathy tone. The resulting voice will be smooth and balanced throughout the entire range, and the vocal range will increase dramatically. SLS technique allows the singer to negotiate the "bridges" of the voice easily and without muscular tension, which results in the ability to easily sing in any style with soul, emotion, and flexibility. Speech Level Singing technique produces voices that remain healthy throughout a lifetime of singing.

Certified Staff

SLS trains and certifies highly qualified teachers throughout the world. Only teachers who are SLS certified are allowed to teach the technique. Speech Level Certification is maintained by ongoing professional education which is required of all SLS teachers. Teachers are tested annually to maintain certification in SLS.

Master Classes

Master classes are given twice per year in many cities by visiting Master Teachers. This unique opportunity is provided to SLS students, the general public, and anyone with an interest in Speech Level Singing, and will enhance the learning process, provide contacts to the music industry, provide inspiration to the student, and establish the SLS community worldwide.

Summer Program

SLS students are encouraged to attend the annual Summer Program in Los Angeles, which is a 10 day program for students who would like to be immersed in Speech Level Singing, make industry connections, perform with a band, learn songwriting and stage performance, etc.
Speech Level Singing originated in Los Angeles, California, with Seth Riggs.

SLS and the larynx:

The term "Speech Level Singing" refers to the functioning of the larynx as it occurs in easy, comfortable speech production. The larynx remains in a relaxed, stable position, does not rise for high pitches or lower to create darker sounds, and the throat, mouth , and soft palate are not manipulated to alter the sound. "Speech Level Singing" does NOT mean "sing like you speak". Many people speak incorrectly, with breathy tones, nasal sounds, or constriction in the throat muscles. "Speech Level Singing" simply refers to sound production made in a natural, unconstricted and unmanipulated manner, with the larynx remaining in a relaxed, stable position.

SLS and the vocal cords:

The demands of singing on the vocal cords are greater than those of speech; singing requires a much greater range of pitch and dynamics. However, those demands must be met by the vocal cords and muscles in the larynx only. If the vocal cords and muscles within the larynx are not trained correctly, the singer will resort (consciously or unconsciously) to the use of outer interfering muscles.

In correct SLS vocal production, there is no muscular interference; as a singer ascends in pitch the cords concurrently reduce in vibrating mass resulting in easy transition through the bridges and a consistent and even sound from the bottom to the top of the range with no disconnecting, breaking, or straining as the higher notes are sung.
