Songwriting

Any artist who is serious about a career in the music business MUST learn the craft of songwriting.

Record companies today want much more than a "pretty face" and good voice. The artists who are getting deals now write their own songs, or are able to participate in a "co-writing session" and bring something to the session. Many people think that, like having a voice, "You either have it or you don't".Nothing could be further from the truth.

Just as a voice can be trained, YOU can learn to write your own songs.

It is essential not to have to depend on some outside producer to give you your songs, give you loops, etc, because you have no control over how good their product is, and whether or not they have given the same loops (and charged another artist for them too) to someone else. An artist needs to have something to say.

Don't depend on anyone else to create your art- YOU can learn the craft of songwriting and be in charge of your own destiny!

Songwriting has many components, which are all teachable-

We work on all these parameters in the study of songwriting. I teach the music part from the perpective of the piano or keyboard. you don't need to be a great pianist to write songs, but you do need to know chords, and understand harmoney and music theory.

I can also teach you how to sing your own background parts, which is also what most artists do now! Most students who work on songwriting with me do 1/2 hour voice, followed by 1/2 of songwriting.

SONG STRUCTURE Verse, Chorus, Bridge- what are they? What is the most popular structure on the radio? What is a "hook"? Where should it go? How long should your song be? What about modulation?

CHORD PROGRESSIONS Learn to write in any key. Major and minor tonalities. What are the most often used chords, and in what order are they used? Common chord progressions found in hit songs. Playing keyboards to accompany yourself. Music theory applied to hit songwriting...

LYRIC WRITING What makes a great lyric? What is the hook? The difference between poetry and hit song lyrics. How to write songs that are "fresh" different and unusual but commercial. Word painting and evoking imagery

GROOVES AND BEATS Rock groove, Funk grooves, Latin- to keep your music from sounding alike in every song- vary the groove! You can learn to think like a drummer, and create endless variety in your writing by expanding your understanding of the groove. MELODY How to write a melody that evokes the meaning of the song. Melodic writing in the chorus-how to provide "lift" and excitement. Understanding scale structures to write better and more interesting melodies

DEMO PRODUCTION After you have written your hit song, now you can record your own CD using State of the Art Pro Tools software- learn to sequence drums, keyboards, and sing on your demos. Your demo will be a professional recording with the latest in recording studio gear. Or you can have your songs recorded for you! This is a vital part of the "package"- most artists who are signed today are self- contained- they write and produce their own songs! Labels are looking for artists who can "do it all" and that will be YOU!

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT Learn to connect with and move the audience- performance skills, "packaging" and finding your own unisque style and niche as an artist!
